Any Licensed Therapist Can Do Prenatal Massage
Did you know that massage schools in Texas cover the basics of prenatal massage? You are not required to have any additional training to perform it. In other words, anyone with a license can do Swedish massage.
As you probably know by now, my practice specializes in working with mostly women. And, of course, sometimes, a client becomes pregnant. I decided to take an additional continuing education course so that I can continue to work with my clients during their pregnancies. I just love the continuity of care this provides.
To be clear, I am not certified in prenatal massage. Because of that, I will work only with clients with uncomplicated pregnancies and only in the 2nd or 3rd trimester.
Differences
You may be wondering how I handle a prenatal massage differently than a regular massage in my office. There are several differences, actually.
First, the client cannot be flat on their back or – obviously – on their stomachs. So I have tons of pillows and have them lie on their side while I work on a hip, leg, back, neck, and then they flip to the other side. Flipping to the other side takes the weight off the hip. Finally, I have them lie on a wedge, which elevates the head and back so that they aren’t lying flat. This position is very comfortable for the client and allows me to work on the front of legs, arms, as well as face, scalp, neck, and upper back. It is wonderfully relaxing for a tired and pregnant body.
Second, I use oil/lotion that is safe for prenatal massage. For example, as long as client is not allergic to coconut, I use fractionated coconut oil. One simple ingredient. You could drink it. Totally safe.
Third, I avoid any strokes that may be jarring and focus on soothing, slow, relaxing strokes.
So a prenatal massage with me is a little different than my regular massage, but it is extremely relaxing and just the thing your pregnant family member or friend would love.
