Sensitive To Scents

sensitive to scents

I don’t know about you, but I am very sensitive to scents. Sometimes, I can even taste strong scents, like strong perfumes. You may be wondering what this has to do with massage. Keep reading to find out more.

Essential Oils

What are my thoughts about scents in the massage room? You may not have even given it a second thought. It is a little controversial because lots of massage therapists love essential oils. I chose from the start to not use essential oils in my practice. I guess I don’t really see a downside to all this.

As you know, it is very difficult to get rid of scents once they are in a space. By choosing to not use essential oils, I have at least eliminated that one.

Massage Lotion

I choose massage lotions and creams that are unscented. They may have a masking scent. I’m always experimenting with lotions and creams but have about got that settled. Anyway, I haven’t found any lotions or creams I use to have a strong or perfumey scent.

Detergent and Cleaners

Besides that, I also use Free & Clear laundry detergent and, if I need a fabric softener, I use an unscented one. In addition, I use unscented cleaning products in the office to sanitize. In other words, I consider every product I use in the massage room and eliminate the scents as much as I can.

Perfume

I, myself, do not wear perfume, so I won’t be wearing any into the office.

Speaking of perfume, I have had a couple of occasions where clients wear strong smelling perfume. This can be problematic with regard to the sheets. Perfume can last through a washing, if you can believe that. Some additional laundry products can get rid of the smell, but sometimes it takes a little experimentation since I don’t want to add scent from the detergent. I ask that clients not wear perfume, if at all possible.

I cannot control what happens in the rest of my office building but nobody has indicated there are problematic scents. If you find there is, please let me know.

I hope that helps clear up my philosophy about fragrances, especially if you are one of those, like me, who are sensitive to scents.
